Turning out en masse and speaking out with clarity and passion, AFP Members last night turned back a Douglas County planning staff effort to legitimize human caused Climate Change as a cause for government regulation. An environmental overlay designed to force the federal government to do a better job of reacting to catastrophic natural disasters such as wildfires, included climate change as one possible cause of such a disaster. The draft overlay also opened large privately-owned forest tracts to government regulation to combat climate change.

With the underpinnings of the entire human-caused climate change theory thrown into serious doubt, AFP-Oregon strongly opposes any effort to give government’s more power to regulate based on climate changes. Government actions will mean lost jobs, higher taxes and less freedom.

At last night’s meeting, AFP Director of Grassroots Development Richard Burke led a demonstration outside the Douglas County Courthouse prior to a Planning Commission meeting intended to discuss the climate change overlay. Later, Burke set the tone by speaking out against the overlay during the comments period of the Planning Commission meeting. The audience was standing-room-only and only one person spoke in favor of the climate change provisions. Many AFP Members spoke against the overlay.

AFP East Douglas County Chapter Leader Rich Raynor, who sits on the Planning Commission, discussed his reasons for being unable to support the overlay. Ultimately, a motion was made to scrap the draft under discussion and rewrite it to eliminate all reference to climate change and remove private property. This motion carried unanimously.

AFP Members in Douglas County, working with many allies from other groups, are to be congratulated for defeating this effort to codify climate change as a reason for government intervention on private property in Douglas County.
